One of the biggest moves of the NBA offseason appears to be on the verge of becoming official.
According to The Athletic, Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks are nearing a buyout agreement that would pave the way for the four-time NBA champion to join the Los Angeles Lakers. Once the buyout is finalized, Thompson is expected to sign with Los Angeles after clearing waivers.
The move would give the Lakers another accomplished veteran and one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. Even in the later stages of his career, Thompson remains a respected perimeter threat whose championship experience and floor spacing could prove invaluable for a team with title aspirations.
For Los Angeles, adding Thompson would address a key need by strengthening its outside shooting while bringing another proven playoff performer into the locker room. His ability to stretch defenses should create additional opportunities for the Lakers’ stars and provide another reliable scoring option.
The buyout would also mark the end of Thompson’s brief tenure with the Mavericks. While Dallas had hoped the former Golden State Warriors star could contribute to its championship ambitions, both sides now appear ready to move in a different direction.
Although Thompson is expected to land with the Lakers, the transaction cannot become official until the buyout is completed and he clears the NBA’s waiver process.
Should the signing become official, it would instantly become one of the most impactful veteran acquisitions of the offseason and further elevate expectations surrounding the Lakers heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
